Positive vs. Negative Pressure Ventilation Ducts

Understand why an air-supply duct and an extraction duct need different reinforcement, suspension and leakage control.

Positive vs. Negative Pressure Ventilation Ducts

Positive pressure delivers air

A positive-pressure duct carries air from a fan into a tunnel, mine or enclosed working area. Seam strength, suspension points, couplings and practical installation length should be specified around the fan output and route.

Negative pressure resists collapse

Extraction duct operates under suction and must resist deformation while maintaining airflow. Reinforcement, ring spacing and fabric construction are chosen to help prevent shrinkage and collapse under the design vacuum.

Leakage affects the complete system

Duct joints, damaged fabric and poor couplings waste fan capacity. Plan the route, suspension spacing and inspection points before installing a long temporary ventilation run.
