High Temperature Duct Ratings Explained: Continuous vs. Peak Heat

Why a short-duration temperature claim should not be treated as a continuous operating rating.

High Temperature Duct Ratings Explained: Continuous vs. Peak Heat

Continuous rating

The continuous rating describes the temperature the duct can handle for normal operation under defined conditions. Actual life still depends on airflow, pressure, flexing, chemical exposure and installation.

Peak or intermittent rating

Peak temperature normally applies for a limited duration. Repeated peaks can age coatings and seams even when every individual event is brief. Ask for both the allowed peak temperature and the maximum exposure time.

Surface contact and radiant heat

Air temperature alone does not describe a duct touching a hot surface or exposed to furnace radiation. Use shielding, insulation or stand-off supports where external heat is significant.
